MSU Pre-College Gender Friendly Practices

Intended Audience:
While this program is intended for Youth Program Directors and Coordinators, Assistant Directors/Coordinators and individuals who supervise MSU Youth Program Directors are also welcome to attend.
Program Overview:
Workshop participants will develop knowledge and skills to become a better ally to LGBTQ youth on campus. This session will provide effective training tools that empower program leaders to ensure that all Pre-college youth have access to meaningful educational experiences, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. Presenters will share national and state data, understanding biased language, from both students and educators, and a comparison of the effects of a hostile versus a supportive climate on educational and social emotional outcomes.
Workshop participants will receive a training resource that can be used to train staff and volunteers who work with their programs.
Workshop participants will also receive information about how to create a safe an equitable environment during overnight programs in University housing.
Program Agenda:
- 8:30 a.m.-9 a.m.- Basics Personal Gender Pronouns and Gender and Terminology
- Presenters: Dr. Susan Sheth and Dr. Christopher Tremblay
- Session: Sheth and Tremblay recently created a quick training and resource to support staff in understanding how to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQ youth on campus. This session will highlight an MSU approved online PowerPoint template MSU Pre-College administrators can use as basic training for staff working in various pre-college programs.
- 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.- Presentation by GLSEN
- Presenters: Joshua Lee and Taryn Gal
- Session: This session will help you and your staff develop knowledge and skills to become a better ally to LGBT youth on campus.
